Zuni Technologies, Inc. - History

The Zuni Indian Tribe, located in west central New Mexico, is a close-knit community that practices its culture and tradition like their ancestors. Of paramount concern to the Tribal leaders is the high unemployment rate that currently stands at 67%. The Zuni Tribe has been exploring other economic development initiatives to address the high unemployment rate. Because of its remoteness, it is sometimes difficult to attract businesses to locate on the reservation.

From this concern, a vision came into focus; a vision that would create needed employment for tribal members while allowing them to retain the ability to practice their religion. The idea was to utilize Information Technology to bring jobs to the reservation. This would be accomplished by seeking federal contracts in such areas as data entry, call centers and scanning, using the SBA 8(a) status.

Among the avenues to attain this vision, the Information Technology (IT) was created under the Zuni Cultural Resource Enterprise Inc. ZCRE is an aggressively responsive, minority owned business with a long and proud tradition in the field of high-quality cultural resource management in the Southwest. ZCRE also maintains the highest level of quality assurance and has received excellent reviews of finished products. ZCRE is not only proud of these accomplishments, but also considers them an inviolable component of our corporate philosophy. A HUD RHED Grant was received for the startup of the Information Technology, with matching funds from the Zuni Tribe’s General Fund. One of the goals under this grant is to gradually grow the division and place computers in houses of Care Givers and Employees with cultural responsibilities.

In 2001, ZCRE, Inc., furthered the effort toward lowering the unemployment rate by attaining 8(a) and HUBZone certification from the Small Business Administration.

Transition:

May 9, 2003 - Zuni Governor & Tribal Council lend support and approval of the Reorganization Plan - To seperate the Division of Information Technology from the parent company, ZCRE Inc.

October 20, 2003 - Zuni Governor and Tribal Council actions:

Convert the Div. of Info. Tech. to a stand alone Tribal Enterprise
New name would be "Zuni Technologies Inc."
Approved Charter of Incorporation
Appointed a Board of Directors
